International Conference on Studies in Turkology, 2016-2018

ICOSTURK was a short series of academic meetings on Turkic languages, history, art and culture. This archive keeps what the three event websites published, page by page.

Three editions, three cities

The first International Conference on Studies in Turkology was announced for Barcelona in August 2016. A second meeting followed in Rome in August 2017, and a third in Amsterdam in September 2018. The organisers ran each one from its own small website, which is why the material here is split in three parts.

1st: Barcelona

23-25 August 2016

The largest of the three sites: committees, topic list, deadlines, keynote speakers and hotel suggestions.

2nd: Rome

11-13 August 2017

A single landing page with the call for abstracts, the venue map and the partner logos.

3rd: Amsterdam

4-6 September 2018

A WordPress site with general information, fees, paper guidelines and the scientific committee.

What the meetings covered

The call was wide on purpose. Eighteen topic headings ran from Turkic folklore and dialects to archaeology, architecture and state management. The full topic list is kept as published, and the paper guidelines explain how abstracts of 150-300 words were handled and what the oral and poster formats looked like.

How to read this archive

Everything here is written in the past tense. Deadlines have passed, fees are no longer collected and no submission system is running. If you are looking for a person who presented, the committee lists and keynote pages carry the names exactly as the organisers printed them. Start with the 2016 calendar if you want to see how the schedule was laid out, or go to the note about this archive for sources and what was left out.

Where the papers went

The proceedings volumes kept circulating after the meetings. Publication records at Turkish universities still point at them: a Sinop University record for a paper on the theme of homeland in pre-Islamic Turkic inscriptions cites the 2017 event site, a Kafkas University record on Turkish-Italian relations in the Turkish press links the 2017 proceedings book, and an Acarindex article lists the 2016 proceedings book in its references.

The 2016 and 2017 PDF files themselves were never captured by the Internet Archive, so their old addresses now lead to the publications page. The 2018 abstract book and proceedings book were captured, and the 2018 publications page links to those copies.
